Things are tough all over

The things you find out when you show up at Drinking Liberally:

Politico has an item on a recent awkward "no comment" moment from Oregon politics:

All Dan Benjamin wants is his money.

Benjamin, a contractor who owns Sundance Contracting, did some work in 2006 and 2007 for Michelle Wu, wife of Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.) and then an interior decorator on Capitol Hill.

Benjamin, who has done work for CNN's Paul Steinhauser, D.C. Superior Court Judge Noel Johnson and D.C. City Councilman Tommy Wells's chief of staff, was named one of the best contractors in D.C. in 2009 by the Washington City Paper's readers.

He says Wu approached him to do "substantial renovation" in her residence, as well as some carpentry in her office and some work for a mutual client. The work for Wu, Benjamin says, was about $12,000.

"She bounced checks to me," Benjamin tells Shenanigans. "She promised to pay me back, and she never did. I [had to] take her to court to get a judgment, and I still have not gotten paid," he says.

The D.C. Superior Court ruled that Wu - who didn't show up - owes Benjamin $10,652.45, according to a copy of the judgment. That's $9,263.00 plus $1,389.45 for late fees. (He's willing to cut his losses on the remainder.)

The rest of the story involves Benjamin's subsequent (as yet unsuccessful) attempts to collect from Wu the money the court says is his due.  DC is a small town for those who live there, so the chase involved moments like this:

Benjamin says he saw her standing in line at a Barbara Walters book signing last year in May. "I pulled her out of line and started talking to her," he says. "She said she was working on it. I also contacted her husband's office and spoke to them and sent a certified letter" to Wu's office.

Still - nothing.

And the finale:

Michelle Wu could not be reached in numerous attempts to contact her. Rep. David Wu's office had "no comment."

Nice! (0.00 / 0)
I mean, that sucks. Nice find, though. With this and the Volm piece, we're having our Us Weekly Magazine jag, I guess...

When the Congressman's Wife.... (0.00 / 0)
If the Congressman's wife is short of money, it stands to reason that the Congressman is as well. Members of Congress short of money, and spending more than their incomes warrant, are - to put it gently - vulnerable to unsavory impulses and illicit persuasion.

This is not a good thing.

I was going to mention... (0.00 / 0)
...that all House members got a $4700 cost of living adjustment increase this year, bringing their salary to something close to $177K.  For those who have forgotten, ever since the speaking-fees-and-book-advance ethics scandals of 20 years ago, the new deal is that members of Congress have agreed to swear off such iffy income streams in exchange for a COLA bump to their salaries.

The sweet part of the deal is that the COLA increase is automatic, unless the Congress votes not to accept it.  This is the fifth year running that Congress has declined to refuse the COLA money.

Of course, in fairness, $177K doesn't go as far in DC [with family] as it does in, say, Hillsboro.  Especially if you want to live like a Congressman.

But, that being said, yeah, it's probably time to pay the bill.
